In the Wake of World War One in Kaliningrad Region Tour Guide
To prepare the map of trails, experts from the History sector of the Kaliningrad Regional History and Arts Museum spent two months selecting accessible sites and memorials. Archive maps, records, and hundred-year-old photographs were studied for the purpose. Then, an expedition was sent out to the selected sites to assess their present-day condition. The work was headed by Elvira Yurchenko, the Head of the History Department of Kaliningrad Regional History and Arts Museum.
As a result of all this work, 89 sites were selected, which included architectural monuments of the time (surviving barracks, hospitals, and so on), mass and individual gravesites, and memorials dedicated to the heroes of World War I erected at various times. The main part of the tours goes through the Gusev, Nesterov, and Ozyorsk Districts of Kaliningrad Region, where the tourists can see gravesites of Russian and German soldiers put in order by the volunteers of the Technopolis GS volunteer movement. Cafés, hotels, first-aid centers, etc. are also marked on the map.
The routes for tours of historic sites can be found in booklet maps distributed at the museums, schools, hotels, and tourist agencies in the Kaliningrad Region.
