Students of Petrozavodsk State University undertook an internship at GS Nanotech in Gusev

Students of Petrozavodsk State University, Faculty of Physical Engineering, undertook an internship at GS Nanotech, a microelectronic product development and manufacturing center, which is a part of the innovation cluster Technopolis GS (the town of Gusev, Kaliningrad region). Educational process held from September 1 to October 12, 2014 was carried out within the collaboration agreement concluded between GS Nanotech and the educational institution this year.

12 students of the Faculty of Physical Engineering of Petrozavodsk State University (PetrSU) undertook an internship at the GS Nanotech enterprise. These were the students studying at departments of "Automated systems of information processing and management", "Information measuring systems and physical electronics" and "General physics".

Within one and half months, PetrSU students were acquiring theoretical knowledge that was subsequently put into practice. GS Nanotech employees elaborated the syllabus in accordance with the features of work at the plant. Thus, prospective Masters and specialists examined new technologies of packaging, industrial engineering and planning, work of the Chief Technology Officer, logistics, ERP and IT systems, quality control and personnel management. According to students, all the disciplines were found to be useful not only to undertake an internship at the enterprise, but to work on the graduate theses as well.

"The internship process is quite a demanding challenge and a solid step towards the future career development," – commented Artem Shkarin, student of the University. – Currently, technical faculties students face difficulties finding a manufacture or service industry, which would correspond to their education. GS Nanotech has not only given the opportunity to undertake an internship relevant to our profession, but has also provided the best conditions to carry it out. The plant employees allowed us making our own decisions at the operating line. These were not very significant decisions, but very important for students’ understanding of what responsibility they bear when are employed by such company."

In addition to internship, students of the University got the chance to express their creativity. They were suggested to develop a logo and slogan that reflect the idea of cooperation between the higher education institution and the modern Russian microelectronic product development and manufacturing center. Winners of contest who were awarded prizes worked out the following slogans: "PetrSU and Nanotech – together into the nano-future!", "Nanotech will open its doors to those who love physics!", "Students of Faculty of Physical Engineering of PetrSU will contribute to the Nanotech performance!", "PetrSU and Nanotech – forward together, together to the top!", "Success formula of GS Nanotech and PetrSU: unity of students’ enthusiasm and modern production".

Internship of PetrSU students at the GS Nanotech plant was not the first experience of its kind. Thus, 8 students undertook an internship at the company in the past year. This year the number of trainees has increased along with the quality of training materials and career development of future specialists and Masters. Educational program implemented by GS Group embraces collaboration with several Russian universities, including Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University. Next year GS Nanotech will also welcome students of Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics for internship.
